The Navy Reserve, as well as the reserve programs of the other services were formed in order to keep citizens, both civilian and those with Prior Service in a state of preparedness. Therefore several hundred officers gathered together to formulate the policy of the reserve association, viz. "support and promote the development and execution of a military policy for the United States that will provide adequate National Security."

The Navy Reserve program was very useful during the mobilization of the Second World War, when recruitment into the armed forces was at a peak for civilians as well as persons with Prior Service. While veterans require no basic training to enroll as a reserve, they can choose from hundreds of naval reserve locations across the US one which is convenient to their jobs and homes.

The idea of the Navy Reserve is for citizens to do some military duty for two days a month, and two weeks a year so that the nation can call upon them when required. These citizens can be from any walk of life, the army, Coastguard, navy or airforce.

Military Pay for reservists of the army, Coastguard, navy, or airforce is paid for the days of duty that personnel put in as well as for any extra days the reservist may wish to put in. The pay is index linked so that it is adjusted to a rise in cost of living. Military Pay of reserves increases for every two years of accumulated service put in. They may also become eligible for the home loan program offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs Home-Loan Guarantee program. They can also use base recreational facilities such as gyms, tennis courts and libraries. Accomplishments are also recognized thru awards, decorations and promotions.

Job Search for jobs in the Navy Exchange do not require that employees have any military background or training. Since the Navy Exchange is a retail organization involved in the sale of goods and services, your Job Search will not yield any non-civilian selection criteria. In fact the exchange has 16,000 civilian employees.
